Wake Up to the Sound of the Sea

South Devon Escapes is a guide to the South Hams, the coast between Dartmouth, Salcombe and Start Point that people picture when they think of Devon. We know it best from Torcross, the village on Slapton Sands where we let No. 2 at the Beach.

    The Exercise Tiger Memorial

    The Exercise Tiger Memorial

    The Exercise Tiger Memorial

The Sherman tank on the Torcross seafront was raised from the bay in 1984. It stands in memory of the American servicemen who died during Exercise Tiger, the D-Day rehearsal held on Slapton Sands in April 1944.

    Beesands & Hallsands

    The Exercise Tiger Memorial

    The Exercise Tiger Memorial

Two more Start Bay villages just along the coast from Torcross. Walk over the cliff to Beesands for crab at the Cricket Inn, then carry on to the ruins of Hallsands, the village lost to the sea in 1917.

    Start Point Lighthouse

    The Exercise Tiger Memorial

    Start Point Lighthouse

One of the most exposed headlands on the English coast, about fifteen minutes from Torcross. Walk the ridge above Start Bay for enormous views, seals below the cliffs and, on a good day, dolphins offshore.
